Oregano is good for everybody! It’s one of those anti-bacterial wonders, that in this day and age, you can not afford to be without, and here’s why:
The essential oil of Oregano is not only the most potent, but if you have the right brand and plant extract available to you, it will be your go-to for everything from fighting bacteria to dealing with the common cold and nasty flu. Dare I say it, but also the occasional stubborn virus….
Caution: Never apply Oregano Essential oil directly to the skin without doing a patch test first, and reading about the essential oil and its uses.
So let’s begin to discover some extraordinary benefits of using Oregano:
- Oregano for fighting bacteria
Thanks to the high levels of carvacrol, Oregano oil may help fight certain types of bacteria. **
For instance, Staphylococcus is a common type of bacteria that causes staph infection. Some strains occur naturally in the body, but when the bacteria grow too quickly, it can cause some very nasty symptoms.
Research has shown that carvacrol is effective in eliminating the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, two common causes of infection. There are several ways to use oregano for treating or fighting bacteria, add several drops to a gel cap and ingest (make sure you have some food in your stomach first), or combine several drops of oregano to the palm of your hand with Fractionated coconut oil and spread on the skin, particularly around the abdominal area.
Researchers are also exploring the use of Oregano oil for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The authors of a study in Frontiers in MicrobiologyTrusted Source found that a combination of Oregano oil and silver nanoparticles effectively eliminated all the bacteria they tested.
- Treating (SIBO) small intestine bacterial overgrowth
Oregano oil may help treat chronic bacterial issues, such as SIBO. People who suffer from SIBO experience gastrointestinal problems due to an overgrowth of certain bacteria in their intestines, these overgrowths come about because of many reasons, one of which I am certain is poor food combination.
In my book Lifestyle Reset, The essential Guide to healing you and the planet, I outline some more complimentary food layering options, because that is how food is experienced in your gut, as layers. When basic and simple food combining rules are ignored, eg, melted cheese on bread, you get a slowing down of the digestive process, which in turn creates a longer transit time, which means a backlog of work for your digestive employees. To be resistant to disease you must have a quick and functioning digestive system; not too quick and not too slow. It’s the balance of digestion and the yin and yang of life. Get this right and you add productive years to your living experience. Oregano is a big part of improving your longevity, another bold statement, but when you know what you are doing it really can make the difference you seek in fighting off the aggressive bacteria that harm the body and the mind.
- Treating fungal infections
Oregano oil also appears to be a potent antifungal agent thanks to high levels of thymol. Thymol is one of the main constituents of Oregano and has been found to be an effective treatment for common Candida fungal infections.
Candida shows up in many areas of most people’s lives. Candida causes several types of infections, including the very nasty oral thrush, yeast infections, infected toenails or fingernails, and athlete’s foot. Here’s a great little tip for you. Drop around 3-4 drops of either Oregano or Tea tree into your sneakers or trainer shoes, to keep your fungal infections under control. When you slip into your shoes before a run or walk etc, you will absorb the residue of the essential oil through your socks, and into your feet. This is just another way of protecting your immune system, through the feet.
Let’s not forget that Oregano oil is also a potent antioxidant. When we think of antioxidants, we think of them being in colourful fruits and vegetables, and as antioxidants help protect the body from damage caused by oxidative stress and free radicals its a very good move to incorporate oregano into your regular health and protection plan. Oxidative stress may lead to increased DNA damage and cell death Trusted Source. Oxidation may also play a role in other issues, such as arthritis, atherosclerosis, and some cancers. Together Thymol and carvacrol are powerful antioxidants that may help reduce oxidation.
- Oregano can help with reducing inflammation
The compound carvacrol shows anti-inflammatory effects in both animal models and in vitro studies. Research from 2017Trusted Source looked at a variety of investigations into carvacrol’s anti-inflammatory effects. Studies have shown that the compound prevented obesity by affecting the genes involved in inflammation. More studies specifically on animals showed the compound reduced swelling.
There is still more research to be done on this, but from personal experience, I have used Oregano on wounds, that had swelling around them and noticed a faster recovery than just using Lavender or Tea tree, although both those oils are certainly excellent companions for treating the skin, cuts, and wounds and the associated swelling that goes with them. Oregano is a sure thing every time! Remember to add fractionated coconut oil to the oil, when applying it to the skin.
- A natural insect repellant
Just like excess of Oregano can ruin a pizza, because of the very strong aroma and taste, insects can be put off by that same aroma. Fact: The compounds within oregano repelled some ticks and mosquitos. Apply the essential oil to the wrists, or on an item of clothing, and combine with tea tree essential oil for successful repellant.
- Relieving pain
There is some evidence that Oregano essential oil may be an effective pain reliever. Adding a few drops of fractionated coconut oil, and Wintergreen essential oil helps to dull an aching back.
- Anti Viral
People who do not enjoy the taste of Oregano should choose the capsules, which they can swallow without tasting the oil.
To use Oregano oil topically for skin issues, dilute one or two drops in a carrier oil. A person can then apply this mixture directly to the skin.
Contraindications: Do not use Oregano oil on children or infants. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with diabetes should also refrain from using it.
Oregano oil can interfere with some medications, including lithium and diuretics. Also, it is possible to be allergic to the oil.
Oregano oil is powerful and may help with a range of issues. While it can, for example, be an antimicrobial remedy, it should not replace medical treatment.
**Antibiotics have been effective in the treatment of infectious diseases, but resistance to these drugs has led to severe consequences. In recent years, medicinal herbs have been used for the prevention and protection against infectious diseases. Thymol and carvacrol are active ingredients of the family Lamiaceae; these components have antibacterial and antifungal effects. Available data from different studies (microbiological, retrieve from PubMed, and Scopus databases) about the antimicrobial effects of carvacrol and thymol are worth reviewing.
Check this: Carvacrol and thymol can inhibit the growth of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. These compounds have antifungal and antibiofilm effects. (you should be doing a happy dance at this statement) Thymol and carvacrol can also be applied as alternative antimicrobial agents against antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacteria. Thus, thymol and carvacrol are recommended for potential medical use; They are actively found in essential oils, and can be readily taken up by the body, in general terms, and used consistently to help prevent disease!
