Someone once said to me that having a comfortable and peaceful bowel motion is the most ‘precious and most relieving experience’ your body could ever have, (after orgasm that is). You see it’s not until you are all blocked up in your internal plumbing that you realise how relevant that statement is. Elimination is a great leveller! Everyone has to ‘poo’, shit, eliminate. ‘If you don’t shit you die!’ So, what’s the best way to create ‘Peaceful Pooing’, and how can we avoid constipation and digestive issues that threaten the very last act of the symphony or concert of ‘digestion and elimination’? I’ve got a few ideas, and I can’t wait to share them with you now…
When you eat food, it goes on a journey. The food becomes a bolus and travels through your stomach and intestines and down to your colon, and then you eliminate the digested waste from the food out! Digestion and elimination involve many aspects of your body including enzymes, hormones, blood flow, and more. So, when just one of the involved organs or systems is off task, your digestion really suffers and that shows up in the toilet bowl, or maybe not!
The digestive system can’t break all your food down, and this then becomes a stool, more commonly known as poo! Once the stool has been formed, the intestine muscles will work to push the stool through the colon and out through the rectum. This entire process should be easy and natural, however, when you have constipation, this means the muscles that work to do the pushing of the stool through the colon are pretty much on a morning tea break, at your expense! This lack of muscle contribution or performance will result in irregular bowel movements which will cause your stool to be hard and dry.
These images give you a pretty good idea of what happens when everything is going great, and then when everything is not so great!
You may not know this, but there is more than one type of constipation, so it is a good idea to be familiar with them. If you are experiencing ‘organic constipation’ you are experiencing a change in your body. This type of constipation should be treated by a professional or doctor. It’s not as common, and should not be ignored!
I’m going to share more about Functional constipation. Functional constipation happens when you are not eating well, not drinking enough water, experiencing high-stress levels and leading an improper lifestyle!
I think you would know when you are suffering from constipation, but since I’m going a little deeper, it’s worth stating the symptoms of constipation:
You will know if you have constipation if you experience any of the following:
- 1. Less than three bowel movements in a week (I’ve had people in my consultation room tell me that their GP said this was normal!)
- 2. Stools are hard, dry and possibly even lumpy
- 3. It is difficult and maybe even painful to pass stools (this is one to really observe and act on)
- 4. You strain when trying to pass stools (again, not a good sign)
- 5. Have the feeling that you haven’t emptied your bowels after passing stool (definitely one of the most understated symptoms)
Constipation is most commonly caused by having too much adulterated (processed) food in your day, therefore, food choices need to be evaluated. Eating too much-processed foods can cause harm by weakening the wall of your colon. The weakening of the colon wall will make it very difficult and uncomfortable for you to push a stool through the colon. Eventually, your muscles will just give up which results in Constipation. Common triggers are low - fibre diet; not drinking enough water; sitting all the time; ignoring the urge to defecate; travelling; laxative overuse; medications and rushing through life!
If your body is having trouble eliminating the waste, ‘the trash’ so to speak, and producing a stool, then all those toxins, harmful germs, and dead cells will be left sitting around in your body, like passengers in a transit lounge when the flight has been delayed. Just like a transit lounge, when new passengers arrive, (more waste builds up), then you have a crowded waiting area. Can you imagine that? As I write this all I can think of is the many times I have been in exactly that situation (in a transit lounge that is, waiting for a flight from an airline starting with the letter J). I wonder what Airline I could be talking about??
Here’s the point, if wasted food is left decaying in your body then you can resabsorb your waste, the following medical conditions become a reality!
- 1. Faecal Impaction
- 2. Varicose Veins
- 3. Haemorrhoids (Piles)
- 4. Anal Tears and Fissures
- 5. A Prolapsed Rectum
- 6. Diverticular Disease
- 7. Migraines
So what sort of techniques and solutions can you employ to have peaceful pooing? For starters, you can eat more flax seeds; get more vegetables and fruits into your day; incorporate Cascara Sagrada (a phenomenal herb that is found in many bowel tonics or fibre blends), use Senna herb as a tea; incorporate slippery elm, bentonite clay, and drink Aloe Vera juice. You can diffuse and use Peppermint Essential oil, ingest Wormseed, use Thyme Essential Oil, incorporate Garlic and Onion into your meals (internal worms don’t like garlic and onion - much like your worm farm doesn’t like citrus), use flaxseed oil, drink Digestzen Essential Oil blend (a few drops in water, or rub on your stomach), drink Fennel and Lime Essential Oil as a tonic in loop warm water.
There are so many more things you can do, but the most important one, the highest priority is………….daddah….
Hydration. WATER - H20. Drink warm water, put a drop of Lemon Essential oil in it, if you like, but drink warm or room temperature water all through the day. Aim for a litre of pure water before 9am and just keep it up. You can never drink too much water, just sip on it, take your time, don’t gulp it down. Enjoy water. It’s life-saving!
Guess what there are a few other things you can do, like meditation, listen to music and dance around a little, think of things that make you happy, deep breath and have a laugh. Peaceful Pooing is your natural right, give your body a gentle shake, jump up and down a little and enjoy the art of pooing.
